Thermal Blankets

Radiative thermal isolation of electro-optical sensors and components is typically required to achieve operational temperatures or solar reject on-orbit environmental loads. Multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets thermally insulate components and assemblies, and reduce radiative heat transfer by employing a series of low emissivity surfaces in addition to a solar rejecting outer layer. SDL has over a decade of experience in designing, fabricating, and installing both flight and ground MLI blankets, specializing in high-performance blankets to cover complex geometry.

  • External and internal MLI design and fabrication
  • Expertise with a variety of external and internal layers, including ITO AgFEP, Germanium, Germanium Black, Beta Cloth, DAK, DAM, SAK/fiberglass laminate, embossed and crinkle inner layers without separation layers, and use of netting separation layers
  • Various venting, grounding, and attachment techniques

Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer

The WISE cryogenically-cooled infrared telescope provided a complete stellar infrared map more than 1,000 times more detailed than previous surveys.

Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere Solar Occultation for Ice Experiment

SOFIE is one of three instruments aboard the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite. AIM’s objective is to study polar mesospheric clouds and the environment in which they form.
